The bid you set isn't the bid that serves: why your keywords are invisible

Five of our keywords sat at ₹20 against a ₹24.68 first-page threshold — 0-2 impressions each, week after week. Where Google hides that number, and the one keyword we deliberately left behind.

Five keywords in our account were enabled, approved, funded — and invisible. Zero to two impressions each, week after week. The campaign’s budget was spending at a quarter of its cap and nothing looked broken, because nothing was, technically. The bids were ₹20. Google’s estimated first-page bid for those keywords was ₹24.68.

That gap — ₹4.68 — was the entire explanation. A keyword bidding below the first-page estimate doesn’t get cheaper clicks. It mostly gets noclicks: the auction happens, your ad ranks below the visible page, and the money sits unspent while the campaign quietly starves. “Under budget” looked like thrift. It was actually absence.

Where Google tells you, if you go looking

Keywords → columns → modify columns → attributes → add Est. first page bid and Est. top of page bid. Google computes both continuously and shows neither by default. Beside your Max CPC column, the diagnosis takes one glance: any row where your bid is below the first-page estimate is a keyword you are paying to keep on the bench.

The status column sometimes says it outright — “Below first page bid” — but only sometimes, and only if you hover. Five of ours said nothing at all.

What we did, and the one we deliberately left

Four of the five went to ₹30 — a little above the ₹24.68 threshold rather than exactly at it, because the estimate moves and a bid that equals it wins nothing. Within a day they had impressions.

The fifth keyword wanted ₹199.96 for the first page. We left it at ₹20 — on purpose. A first-page estimate ten times your other keywords isn’t an invitation to bid more; it’s Google telling you that keyword lives in a different market than your budget. Chasing it would have eaten the whole ₹200 daily budget on one or two clicks. Not every invisible keyword deserves rescue.

The three-line checklist

  1. Add the two estimate columns

Keywords → columns → modify columns → attributes

Est. first page bid and Est. top of page bid, next to your Max CPC.

  2. Sort by the gap

Your bid minus the first-page estimate. Negative rows are the invisible ones.

  3. Raise the close ones, leave the wild ones

A little above the line — not exactly at it, the estimate moves. A threshold 10× your other keywords is a different market, not an invitation. Check again in a month; the estimates drift with the auction.
